Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that have the capacity of self-renewal and to develop into diverse cell types in different areas of the body. Given these characteristics, stem cells have become promising options to bolster regenerative medicine efforts that may provide therapeutic results that are not possible with current approaches. The utility of stems cells to renew tissues affected by trauma and degenerative conditions can provide breakthroughs in the treatment of numerous diseases, such as cardiovascular, neurological, and other diseases.

The stem-cell market is ever growing worldwide, and there is a massive demand for regenerative medicine approaches to treat many common, yet incurable health problems. Recognizing this demand, scientists from industry and academia are collaborating to strengthen innovation in the stem cell therapy arena. An example is the conference recently organized by the China Industry-University-Research Institute Collaboration Association and the stem cell therapy development company Cell Biological. The objective of the conference was to examine the research progress and industry advancements in stem cell regenerative medicine.

Cell Biological has developed a number of medically critical stem cells such as those that are capable of producing insulin. Thomas Südhof, a Nobel laureate in medicine at Stanford University, collaborates with Cell Biological to study the use of stem cells to treat various neurological diseases. Also, the rapidly advancing knowledge of human gene function complements stem cell technology and supports endeavors in neurological science and medicine.

Treatment methods and approaches using stem cells can have a significant impact on human health. Despite the great potential of stem cell-based therapy for many difficult-to-treat diseases and conditions, much work still remains to be done to better understand how to apply safe and effective use of stem cells for regenerative medicine. The hope is that research breakthroughs can soon translate into clinically applicable and successful treatments that provide positive health outcomes.
