The results from a number of research studies show the relationship between cannabinoid receptors and increased risk of developing psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. The cannabinoid receptor system, which regulates many of the body’s biological functions, is made up of endogenous (produced or existing in the body) cannabinoids and the receptors that they bind to. Cannabinoid receptors exist in various tissues, particularly the brain and immune system.
